Inbreeding effects in wild populations

چکیده
USA. Small and isolated populations are inherently more vulnerable to external environmental perturbations and chance fluctuations in local survival and fecundity [termed ‘ENVIRONMENTAL STOCHASTICITY’ and ‘DEMOGRAPHIC STOCHASTICITY’, respectively (see Glossary)]. Are they also threatened by inbreeding and the loss of genetic diversity? With data on the effects of inbreeding in wild populations scarce, some zoologists questioned its importance (or even its existence) in natural populations [1–3]. Recent evidence, however, now suggests that both inbreeding and inbreeding depression are more pervasive than previously realized. In addition, some studies point to inbreeding as an important threat that can directly affect population persistence, making it a key concern for conservation biologists. Here, we review this recent work, including studies of both plant and animal populations that exploit a range of traditional and molecular genetic techniques. Although we emphasize the empirical results, we also present the background theory needed to evaluate critically these approaches and place the results into context.

Comparison of genetic variation of wild and farmed Bream (Abramis brama orientalis; berg, 1905) using microsatellite markers
Bream (Abramis brama orientalis) is one of the most commercially valuable fish in the Caspian Sea. The aim of this study was to compare levels of genetic polymorphism between wild and farmed Bream populations using seven microsatellite loci. Genetic diversity was investigated by studying samples collected from two regions; Chaboksar and the Artificial Propagation Center of Guilan province. Alle...
متن کاملNo evidence of inbreeding depression in sperm performance traits in wild song sparrows
Inbreeding is widely hypothesized to shape mating systems and population persistence, but such effects will depend on which traits show inbreeding depression. Population and evolutionary consequences could be substantial if inbreeding decreases sperm performance and hence decreases male fertilization success and female fertility. However, the magnitude of inbreeding depression in sperm performa...
متن کاملRelative risks of inbreeding and outbreeding depression in the wild in endangered salmon
Conservation biologists routinely face the dilemma of keeping small, fragmented populations isolated, wherein inbreeding depression may ensue, or mixing such populations, which may exacerbate population declines via outbreeding depression. The joint evaluation of inbreeding and outbreeding risks in the wild cannot be readily conducted in endangered species, so a suggested 'safe' strategy is to ...
متن کاملInbreeding: When Parents Transmit More Than Genes
Inbreeding in wild populations can have devastating effects on fitness, but the genetic causes should not be transmitted across generations. A new study of song sparrows has revealed a parent-offspring resemblance for inbreeding, resulting from population structuring, with important implications for understanding the genetic causes of phenotypic variation in wild populations.
متن کاملGenomics advances the study of inbreeding depression in the wild
Inbreeding depression (reduced fitness of individuals with related parents) has long been a major focus of ecology, evolution, and conservation biology. Despite decades of research, we still have a limited understanding of the strength, underlying genetic mechanisms, and demographic consequences of inbreeding depression in the wild. Studying inbreeding depression in natural populations has been...
متن کاملCompare genetic variation for roach (Rutilus rutilus caspicus Linnaeus, 1758) resulting from the proliferation of wild broodstock, breeding and hybrid (wild broodstock × fusion) using microsatellite markers
The aim of present study was to compare levels of genetic polymorphism between offspring of wild , farmed and mix of them of Roach (Rurilus rutilus caspicus) using five microsatellite loci (CA1, CA7, CypG27, Lid1, Rru4). Genetic diversity was investigated by studying samples collected from three population, 90 fish, thirty specimen form each population. All samples fixed in ethanol 96% until ...
